Review: 'Jo Hum Chahein'

Film: Jo Hum Chahein
Cast: Sunny Gill, Simran Kaur Mundi, Achint Kaur, Alyy Khan
Director: Pawan Gill
Rating: Does not qualify

Since over two hours had been spent watching Jo Hum Chahein, which effortlessly finds a prestigious place in the yearend’s Worst Films list, an hour should be now spent writing about the gem that it is.

An extremely over-confident, narcissist for a hero and his awkward former beauty queen female stuck in a hackneyed plot, could be the most polite description of what’s in store with Jo Hum Chahein.

Still, if you insist, here’s what happens... Our preening hero Rohan Bhatia (Sunny Gill) is a fresh MBA graduate, determined to make it big in the corporate world. Rohan and his friend Abhay bag a job in a stocks company in Mumbai. Lured by greed and putting to use his “charisma”, Rohan is noticed by stock market whiz Vikram (Alyy Khan), who in turn introduces Rohan to a visibly sex-starved socialite Amrita (Achint Kaur). Amrita invests through Rohan and he earns handsome commissions.

Enter aspiring model Neha Kapoor (Simran Kaur Mundi) who falls in love with Rohan. She even changes his philandering ways, only to be later shocked to catch him in bed with Amrita. Phew!

This reviewer is still figuring what the storyline was and where it was headed to justify the existence of the film and this review.

The writing is amusing. Writer and director Pawan Gill garnishes his script with all the cheese in the world, using every possible English idiom to emphasise emotional tension. You can’t help but snigger. One could carve out a neat almirah out of the wooden Sunny Gill, while Simran Kaur Mundi could be his pink curtain.

Achint Kaur is uptight yet tolerable. Beggars can’t be choosers, they say. This reviewer has been bitten by the proverbial bug since the torture of Jo Chahein Hum.

To get a better idea of how the cast of Jo Hum Chahein interacts, watch cartoon Doraemon on Disney channel. Jo Hum Chahein is a life-size Doraemon, minus the joy the little Japanese characters give you.

You wonder why we watch such films and review them. It’s all in the interest of you, dear reader. Jo Hum Chahein is everything you never want.
