Review: Hope this 'Final Destination' is the final one

The Final Destination 3D
Certificate: A
Cast:
Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Haley Webb and Nick Zano
Director: David R Ellis
Writer: Eric Bress
Rating: *

So in the first one (Final Destination), the protagonist and a few escape a plane crash (to die eventually of course), in the second (Final Destination 2), a mass pile-up of cars on a highway leading to more crashes and in the third (Final Destination 3), a roller-coaster crash. This time they are in a race track. Yes, you guessed it right. There is an accident and a few of them escape.

The premise of the movie remains like the previous installments. The lead has a vision (of impending death of course) and he is able to save a few. However, Death cannot be cheated and one by one the survivors die. Freakishly, one might add. The survivors try to outrun their horrible fatalities, but realize eventually that death can only be temporarily dodged.

The earlier scripts had some wit to it. This one is completely bereft of it; hoping that 3D can help its case. But then 3D can only do that much.

The initial scene, when Nick (Bobby Campo) has a premonition is actually not as bad as what is to follow. There are exploding cars, man’s head falling on a plank of pointed wood to have it stick out of his mouth, metal car parts slicing couples in half. The filmmaker wants gore and the audiences get it. But it is all downhill post that.

After all how much human innards can be shown, or gasoline used. And even the whole setting up of their deaths, resembles more like the cartoon character Dexter’s experiments. While in Dexter there might have been a liquid being heated in a beaker, the gas of which enables something else to move, and eventually Dexter goes “Voila”.

Here there are instances where a person carelessly leaves his glasses. The sun then heats it and just in front of the glasses conveniently placed is a pile of dry hay. Oh yeah even more conveniently there are plenty of jerkins of gasoline lying around.

Hopefully, the movie is the final of the Final Destinations.
