Review: Faster is revenge, served hot!

Film Faster (English)
Director George Tillman Jr
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Billy Bob Thornton
***1/2

Driver (Dwayne Johnson) has a mission — to kill all those who were responsible for his brother’s death. After spending a decade in prison for a robbery gone bust, Dwayne walks out with tattoos and all —ready to pull the trigger, which he does in style.

But his path is riddled with obstruction as a nearly-retired cop (Billy Bob Thornton) and a hired killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is baying for his blood. What happens eventually doesn’t come as a massive surprise but the writers have been smart for sure — ensuring there is a hint of irony laced throughout to keep the film interesting.

Faster isn’t exactly a film that gets your grey cells working overtime because, let’s face it, the plot does come with ample holes but it does reflect a certain level of intelligent scripting. The writers give the audience a peek into Dwayne’s source of anger and confusion packed within the folds of the general flow of the story without much flashback to rely upon.

Talk of performances and what comes to mind is how Dwayne, Billy Bob and Oliver Jackson could have done with more opportunities on the screen.

But one thing’s for sure, Johnson didn’t have to spend much time rehearsing dialogues because he has very little to say as he goes stomping around looking like a muscle-builder. Jackson, as the rich, bored and confused hit man, looks delicious and makes the most of whatever screen time he’s given and as for Billy Bob, addict and not-so-liked cop, we’ve seen better from him.

George Tillman Jr, who also has the marvellous Men Of Honor to his credit (starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr) and Notorious (the 2009-film about Notorious B.I.G. aka Christopher Wallace), walks a different line in the action category. And while

Faster isn’t quite near Men Of Honor as far as story-telling goes, but it does give us something to watch to for the one hour and thirty eight minutes of runtime.
