British comedy occupies a unique space and attempting to copy it into a Bollywood film, peopled by a collection of non-actors, is a travesty. To top it off, Tushar Hiranandani takes credit for story and screenplay when Daddy Cool is a frame-by-frame remake of Frank Oz’s Death at a Funeral. Surely, the decent thing would have been to say ‘adapted by’. But perhaps the original makers would want to distance themselves from this disastrous attempt at comedy which verges on lewd, crass and tedious.

The similarities are so close that the makers have even found an English manor and the art direction is a facsimile of the original. Events unfold in Goa during the funeral of Douglas Lazarus where his sons, nieces, nephews, siblings, widow, a blackmailer and hallucinogenic drugs show up and add to the chaos.

The only differences are the atrocious performances and Daddy Cool’s mainstream ending, modified in order to be politically correct. Daddy Cool is about as much fun as attending a funeral!
