When Danny Boyle makes a film on Mumbai, he can’t help but pay homage to Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan, the biggest star India has ever produced didn’t have a smooth entry in filmdom. After incessant flops, he managed to make a mark on the box office with Anand. Rajesh Khanna was the superstar and despite Amitabh having a supporting role in the film — he still managed to leave an impact. He entered the big league with Zanzeer as a new hero who fought the villain himself during testing times. And the rest as they say is history.

Out of the numerous movies he has done, here’s looking at the 32 movies acquired by Shemaroo.

After his brilliant success as the ‘angry young man’, the star system changed and films were written keeping him in focus. Out and out masala movies like Namak Halaal, The Great Gambler, Deewar, Kasme Vaade, Satte Pe Satta broke box office records and the great French film-maker Francois Truffaut famously called him a ‘one man industry’.

His outburst coupled with a melodramatic mother gave him memorable performances in films like Trishul, Majboor and Deewar. His comic timing was near perfect in films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Chupke Chupke and Hera Pheri. During his peak, some of the worst films were written and made; but beyond all those he always tried to do meaningful cinema — hence working with the likes of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee.

The films off the beaten track were Alaap, Manzil, Bemisaal and Mili. He had his stint in patriotic movies too with films like Desh Premee and Pukar. A few average films like Raaste Ka Patthar, Mahaan, Nastik, Bandhe Haath, Benaam, Besharam, Ek Nazar, Jurmana, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Indrajeet etc made appearances in theatres.

A brief sabbatical and again the comeback wasn’t easy enough. A few hits after a sting of flops and he again managed to surface in the film industry power lists. Below average films like Family, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, Kyon…Ho Gaya Na came; so did the hits with solid performances like Baghban and Khakee.

He has completed 40 years in the industry and is still going mighty. He was a director’s dream and he continues to be so. The shine of India’s biggest superstar has the mark of an eternal stamp and these movies will just add sparkle to his ever increasing legacy.
