The Angry Birds Movie review

Film: The Angry Birds Movie
Director: Clay Kaytis, Fergal Reilly
Voice Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Sean Penn

What's it about

They weren't all angry. Most of them were happy. Until Leonard (Hader) and his pigs arrive at Bird Island to be friends (well, we've all played the game, so we know that can't be right). Or steal eggs.

The only thing that stands in the way of an impending ham-apocalypse is one perennially angry bird called Red (Sudeikis) and his later-on buddies Chuck (Gad) and Bomb (McBride) and the other assorted flightless birds of their village.

Of course, they expect a little help from one Mighty Eagle (Dinklage), but that's easier said than done.

What's hot

The cast is packed to the gills with comedic talent. Kaytis and Reilly try to bring the vision of Rovio to a larger audience by expanding on a story we're all vaguely familiar with. If it has its way at the box-office, there's a slim chance this film might actually have something better to offer, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

To be fair, it does have quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, plenty of chuckles and some really decent animation to offer.

What's not

However, since we all know what familiarity breeds, it would have been more prudent for the writers and directors of this film to have their guard up, to realise that while it is based on a game played by adults and children alike, jamming the screenplay at all turns with sight gags and pop culture references only adults (and I mean, mostly film buffs) will understand, only proves to be their downfall. In particular, the bird's first meeting with Mighty Eagle is also a bit cringe-worthy to sit through or explain to your kids, if you're taking them along. Also, this film could be far, far shorter to have any impact.

What to do

Don't go in with too many expectations and you won't be disappointed. It's worth one viewing but could have been more than just that.
