'Focus' review: Smooth caper from the house of Will Smith

Movie: Focus
Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Cast: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Adrian Martinez, Rodrigo Santoro
Rating: ***

What's it about: He steals stuff. She steals his heart. He pushes her away after a particularly big and successful con. Things are never the same again. They meet years later in Buenos Aires. She's with a race car team owner and he's there to help said owner pull off a con of his own. Will they con each other into falling for each other again?

What's hot: The dialogue is sharp, witty, and the chemistry quite casual, yet extremely likeable between lead pair Will Smith and Margot Robbie. For a caper film, it's surprisingly light and has this air of never taking itself too seriously. Not one of Smith's finest, but nowhere close to his worst either. And that's saying something. Robbie has a sincere air about her, and her smile lights up the frames she's in. But for the most part, seems like a fish out of the water.

What's not: Will Smith pulls off a Tom Cruise, only looking a lot more tired doing it. It really hurts this film that it has cusswords muted because the next joke is built around some of them. Santoro (who played Xerxes in 300 and Rise Of An Empire) is kinda wasted in this film and you don't buy into his bodyguard Owens' (Gerald McRaney) description of his boss as 'a man you don't want to cross', even for a minute!

What to do: It's not great. But it's a good way to spend two-odd hours of your weekend. Will and Margot look like a million bucks, and that there, is half the job done!
