Film review: 'Thor - The Dark World' rises to the occasion, flies, but doesn't quite soar!

Film: Thor - The Dark World
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Director: Alan Taylor
Rating: ***

What's it about

Thor (Hemsworth) is one of the most good looking and mystical super heroes from the series. There's always an aura of superiority about him, be it his hammer or that 'I-care-a-damn' chip on his shoulder, the guy has a back story worth checking out.

In its sequel we find the sinister dark Elves lead by Malekith (Eccleston) have plans for global domination. To deter this from happening, Thor needs to do the unthinkable - join hands with his nemesis Loki (Hiddleston) to stop the inevitable. What follows is a series of CGI battle scenes, and some brilliant banter between Hemsworth and Hiddleston.

What's hot
There is no denying the fact that Hemsworth makes a superb Thor. Right from his blond locks to his ensemble everything is just as it should be. The best scenes are of course the ones between Loki and Thor.

Despite an array of supporting characters that boast Hollywood heavy duties such as Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo and Natalie Portman, the focus always stays on the camaraderie between Hiddleston and Hemsworth.

The special effects are remarkable and attention to detail has been paid for the casts ensemble, make up and set decoration. Also for fanboys of the literature there is a little bit of history and back story that will appeal to those wanting to dig deeper.

What's not
Predictability is the films biggest enemy. Even before we hit the middle, there is a sense of where the story is going and how the end will be. Those expecting big twists and turns will be in for a disappointment.

Every time Loki comes on screen there is a palpable sense of excitement which goes away as soon as the story moves on to other characters. Some of the dialogues are out right cheesy and sound dated!

What to do
Thor rises to the occasion, he flies, but doesn't quite soar! Fans won't be disappointed though.
