Zeenat Aman talks about her life on screen and off it

It’s hard to describe a person who, when she walks into a room, can trigger off an eerie silence.

A timeless beauty, a true diva, Zeenat Aman — who was bold enough to bare and confident enough to quit the film industry at the peak of her career — has that effect on people even today, no matter her age.

The actor, who graced the ramp as the showstopper for designer Riyaz Gangji, at the Blenders Pride Bangalore Fashion Week on Thursday, sits down to talk about the film fraternity, fashion and Bangalore too. Excerpts of the interview...

Walking for Riyaz...
I’ve know Riyaz for quite some time and there is something unique about his work. His designs are feminine, elegant and suitable for mothers like me (laughs). Usually, I survey the ramp and try to get comfortable before walking. But this time, I couldn’t as my flight was delayed. But, I was touched by the way Bangalore’s audience cheered for me!

Fashion is…
...all about being comfortable. I’ve always styled myself the way I wanted to. Today, the fashion industry has changed a lot. Young girls are clued in on current trends. Fashion has also become synonymous with the film industry. Everyone is trying their best to look their best.

This city...
I am visiting Bangalore after several years and it has changed. But it is still beautiful — there is a charm about the place.

Back on screen...
I took a long break after I got married. I’ve been a single mother for the last 13 years, my only concern was my sons. Now that they are at a stage where they can choose their own lives, I am back to doing what I love — films. There are promising directors in the industry right now who make some wonderful movies. It’s a great sign!

Life so far…
My life as a star was an incredible journey. I was just a teenager when I took my first step into the industry. I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with some wonderful actors and directors. Several good films — Don, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Yaadon Ki Baarat — have been turning points in my career. It is tough to choose one particular phase as the best, as every moment has helped me get to where I am and who I am today.
