You are not a good director till you give a commercial hit: Remo D'souza

Ace choreographer-turned director Remo D'souza, who is quite exited about his debut film Faltu, says a commercial hit is required in bollywood to be accepted as a good director.

Faltu, a comedy film directed by D'souza and produced by Vashu Bhagnani, stars Jackky Bhagnani, Puja Gupta, Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi. Besides Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen, R Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor in cameo roles as themselves.

"Since it is my first film, it is a do or die situation. I believe till one does not give a commercial hit film in Bollywood, you are not regarded as a good director. No matter how good the film is, you won't be considered a successful director until you have tasted commercial success," D'souza told PTI in an interview.

"It is an important film for me. I can just hope that the film does well," he said.

D'souza who started his career with Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela got the real breakthrough when he choreographed an item number Ishq Samundar… from the film Kaante, that proved to be a major success.

However, this is not his first film as a director really as he had directed a Bengali film earlier.

"I have directed a Bengali film called Lal Paharer Kotha that is based on Chhau, a tribal dance form in Orissa and West Bengal, and has Mithun Chakraborty in the lead."

The choreographer-turned-director feels directing a movie is easy.

"Direction is not that difficult. Since it is your baby and you can do it the way you want it to be," he said.

The movie hits theatres on April 1.

D'souza, who has judged dance reality shows like Dance India Dance and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa feels it was television that gave him immense popularity and made him a household name.

"Earlier people were not aware about me and my work. Only industry people were aware about me. After doing television shows every one in the country knows me including children. They all know me by my name. TV has made my life. I feel like it is my second birth," D'souza said.
