Who wants to be Akshay Kumar?

With news of Bollywood film Tees Maar Khan being converted into a game, DNA tracks the popularity of movie-based games.

Who wants to be Akshay Kumar?

How would you like to play the role of Akshay Kumar in Tees Maar Khan (TMK) and set out on a pilfering spree? Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? And while the film might not have brought in expected results, UTV Indiagames and Airtel Digital TV have converted TMK into a game and have brought it to your home screens and mobiles!

The biggest conman in the reel world is now all set to include the art of conning in the gaming space! Talking about the conceptualisation of the game, Sugato Banerji, chief marketing officer, DTH — Bharti Airtel, says, “We have tied up with UTV movies for the launch of this game. Considering the fact that movie games are becoming popular these days, we thought it would be a good idea to convert the movie into a game. This is the first time we are doing this and we are really excited about it,” he says.

Describing the game, he says, “The user will play as TMK himself and will have to rob a series of banks, museums and a train filled with tons of gold, tactfully avoiding the patrolling guards and various high-tech security devices! The game, broken into three stages, will put the gamer’s reflexes to test as they immerse more deeply into this stylishly interactive game.”

“One can play this game on mobiles as well as on television. Apart from the fact that these games are popular, playing them on modes like television and mobiles is even more fun,” adds Sugato.

The recent launch of voice blogs — mCricket, mBollywood by vRock Mobile, where everything can be accessed on the mobile, stresses on the fact that the mobile industry is a complete entertainment package indeed. Jatin Ahluwalia, CEO, vRock Mobile says, “Apart from serving the basic purposes of a telephone, adding these interesting apps makes phone usage even more interesting. Initially, movie-based games need to be brought and played on television. But now, it has become even easier as you get them on the phone at the click of a button.”

What’s more, the recent release of Tron Legacy, a sequel to the cult Tron, has also come up with a video game called Tron Evolusion! The story of the game will bridge both the first and the second part, making the game more exciting and entertaining.

However, TMK and Tron Legacy are not the only movies that have been converted into games. Hollywood has seen several movies like X-Men and so on as games, and Bollywood has seen movies like Ghajini and Krrish being converted as games.

Wondering if these games are as interesting as they sound? Model Zoheb, a gaming freak says, “To start off with, it is a brilliant advertising plan for movies! There have been cases where the movies don’t click, but the games based on the film do really well in the market.” He also adds that compared to playing games on the television, the mobile versions are quite handy. “Playing video-games on mobiles is a lot more convenient. These games are quite addictive and make for great timepass, especially when one is travelling,” he says.

Mystician Ugesh Sarcar, who is also into a lot of gaming, says, “The fact that you are the hero of the game itself is very exciting. It’s pretty interesting to play such games as they also keep your reflexes high.”
