What’s the big deal about Valentine’s Day, asks Sonam Kapoor

She may be wearing pink, but the actress says she doesn’t understand the fuss around Valentine’s Day — after all, ‘not being in love is not the end of the world!’

What’s the big deal about Valentine’s Day, asks Sonam Kapoor

She’s sexy, she’s single, but GenNext star Sonam Kapoor reveals that she’s in no mood for love! Never mind that her last outing saw her play a die-hard romantic, the sassy actress insists that she’s not completely like her on-screen avatar in the Imran Khan-starrer.

“Love is a beautiful emotion, but I don’t understand the big fuss around Valentine’s Day. I mean if you are in love great, but not being in love is not the end of the world either. So, what’s the big deal anyway?” she asks.

The actress, who’s away in New Zealand shooting for her forthcoming film, does not endorse Valentine’s Day, and admits that she doesn’t let herself be carried away by the ‘mushy atmosphere’ that’s a part and parcel of the day’s celebrations, but adds that she’s not the kind to wear black on the day just to prove her point either.

“It’s really each to their own. I know of couples who celebrate the day so devotedly. As long as it makes you happy, great. But I don’t see myself celebrating because everyone is, so I ought to too!” she explains.

But the actress does have some childhood memories to share of celebrating V-Day. Ask her about them and she laughs, “In school, I was actually pretty fat and not exactly what you’d call pretty. I don’t think any guy even noticed that I existed. But yes, it was a day when there would be a lot of fun, excitement and then exchanging of ‘love stories’ and finding out secret crushes.”

But that was a few years back. Today, Kapoor’s neither fat nor the average Jane. And the Bolly beauty does admit to getting Valentine messages and red rose bouquets since the past few years now.

“Yes, I do get messages and flowers and chocolate boxes, and I think it’s all sweet too, but I don’t take them seriously. I mean, I’m not exactly waiting to be swept off my feet.” But wouldn’t she want to? “Well, with my busy shoots, that’s exactly what the guy will have to do to get my attention, literally!” she laughs. Kapoor points out that she will be able to give all that a miss this year. “Well, I’m here in New Zealand and only very few close friends can get in touch with me. So, I’ll have a quiet Valentine’s Day that my friends will make special anyway with their lovey-dovey messages, I guess,” she smiles.

But she admits that despite not having a Valentine, she’s never really felt left out ever. “I don’t think our generation really thinks about ‘love’ in terms of ‘be it all’. There’s life beyond love too and we are well-aware of that,” she says. The actress however is quick to clarify that she’s not against love.

“I myself would love to be in love someday, but I don’t spend my time ruing the fact that I’m not. Love in any form is a wondrous feeling, be it between lovers, or as parents for kids or between siblings or friends. And you don’t need just a day to proclaim it. You just got to feel it, that’s all,” she smiles.
