There will be no sequel to 'Jodi Breakers'

Director Ashwini Chaudhary rubbishes all rumours, says the fate of a film decides its future.

There will be no sequel to 'Jodi Breakers'

A decent script, hit music, two popular actors and a well-chalked out marketing strategy — despite all this director Ashwini Chaudhary’s Jodi Breakers slumped at the box office. Neither the 140 words of praise on Twitter by the industry nor the average reviews by the critics got converted into footfalls, alas.

In spite of all this, there was sudden news of Jodi Makers, the sequel to Jodi Breakers being announced.

“There will be no sequel,” states Ashwini, adding, “Sequels work only when the original has been received by the audience and that’s not the case with Jodi Breakers.”

The director can’t think of any obvious reason for the film not doing well even when everything seemed to be on track initially — promos, music, pairing, humour and storyline. “I agree it wasn’t a great subject but it’s like any mainstream, commercial film — a good one-time watch. In fact, even the trade pundits who understand numbers have been proven wrong. Most of them had predicted the film to be a success,” informs Ashwini.

Ashwini, known for his award-winning film Dhoop, which dealt with the bereaved family of an army jawan killed in Kargil, followed it by a forgettable Good Boy Bad Boy. Jodi Breakers saw him venture into a light-hearted, rom-com with a new pairing — Bipasha Basu and R Madhavan.

“As a team, we are still in touch but don’t want to do a post mortem of the film. We respect the verdict of the audience in spite of all the hard work,” he states.

Going by recent trends, Ashwini feels strange how numbers govern the fate of a film.

“How can numbers come between the cinematic experience? That should be a different experience but doesn’t look like it anymore,” he rues.

Soon to start work on his next project, Ashwini prefers to remain tight-lipped about its details.

“I hope it’s a film that doesn’t need me to look for the reasons as to why it didn’t work,” he signs off.
