Actress Nidhi Subbaiah, whose dubbing skills were lauded in her last film, is surprised she’s not been asked to dub for the next few.

That’s not my voice: Kannada actress Nidhi Subbaiah

I haven’t signed up for anything new,” admits actress Nidhi Subbaiah, who has just completed shooting for her next film — Krishnan Marriage Story. “Nothing exciting has come along,” she reasons. And while she waits for those plump offers, she’s apparently been busy working out real hard.

While her last film Veerabahu won itself good reviews, her fans and critics were zapped that she hadn’t dubbed for her own role.

She says, “When I got to know that someone else had already dubbed for me, I was quite surprised too. Especially since I had got great feedback for my dubbing skills in Pancharangi. People loved my little intonations and innovations that lifted the character in the film. So, quite naturally, I was very upset that the team of Veerabahu didn’t even inform me that I wasn’t dubbing for myself. I believe the audience sees a disconnect when a person does not dub for her own character.

That’s been the case with my latest film as well. Some production houses use heroines as props just until the film is completed. After that, it ends up becoming the hero’s film. It is about time that the women in the industry were treated at par with heroes. After all, as one of my previous producers had said, it is the heroine’s face on the posters that brings in the crowd.”
