Tellydom’s ‘power’ puff girls

The Indian TV industry was traditionally a male-dominated one with men holding key positions in most channels. However, this trend is witnessing a huge change. Nowadays, many key positions in the Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GEC) are being held by women. In some cases, these women are even becoming faces of the channels they represent.

Priya Bhave Sharma, creative director, non-fiction of Sony Entertainment Television, says, “Women are no longer looked upon as the weaker sex. They are better organised than men and are better managers. In fact, women today are leading the so-called male-dominated industries.”

Ashvini Yardi, programming head of Colors, feels being a woman is more of an advantage. “Majority of our audience is female. Being a woman, I can understand their needs better and hence I am able to provide them with what they like,” she says.

These women feel they have more to them than just their looks. Ashvini says, “Saying they (women) are in the spotlight merely because of their looks is belittling their talent. Women have been doing a great job and it’s time they got recognised for their good work.”

Sapangeet Rajwant, brand head of Zee TV, ends saying, “It’s your work that finally matters and speaks for you. Thankfully, in today’s age women have been accepted very well across various fields of work."
