Teen Marilyn Monroe's first letter home up for grabs

A never-before-seen letter of Marilyn Monroe describing her marriage to 21-year-old James Dougherty is expected to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 in an auction.

The touching note gives a fascinating insight into her early life, when she was simply 16-year-old Norma Jean, a world away from the stardom that awaited her.

The 16-year-old Monroe described her role as a housewife to Grace McKee, her guardian and a close friend of her mother Gladys Baker.

"It really keeps me busy cleaning this house and fixing meals," the Daily Express quoted her as saying in the letter.

"Everybody told me that it is quite a responsibility being a housewife and, boy, I'm finding it out, but it really is a lot of fun," she added.

The screen legend married Dougherty on June 19, 1942, in Los Angeles having met him the previous year.

Later in the letter the actress gushes: "Jimmy is so swell to me, in fact I know that if I had waited five or 10 years I couldn't have found anyone who would have treated me better."

"I just think the world of him and we get along so nicely. He is just so sweet about every little thing.

"We sure have a cute little house. I'm going to take a picture of it and will send it to you," she wrote.

The letter will be sold at Bonham's in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
