Fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani has an ambitious goal.
The designer wants to find the perfect mix between Indian and Western wear. He feels Indian designers can have a better signature on the global fashion map the moment they find that perfect fusion.
“Indians either create or wear traditional Indian dresses or fully Western clothes. India has to have a signature of its own - that is my dream. The only way our country can achieve that is by creating a line that is a perfect fusion of Indian and Western motifs and silhouettes. The world is looking at us as we are a giant of a country,” Tarun says.
He adds, “Doing just pure traditional stuff won’t help as people living outside India are not interested in them. Similarly, if we make Western clothes, there are many designers in foreign countries who make it equally well. No one comes to India to buy a suit or ballroom dresses. They come to us because they want to take our culture, heritage and craftsmanship on a silhouette that is wearable for their clients.”
Speaking about his line at the ongoing Delhi fashion week, Tarun says, “The look of the clothes is absolutely Indian but elements have been drawn from South-Eastern Asia, Turkey and other Middle-East countries. The colours I have used are those used by the Byzantium civilization.”
