Stage veterans Michael Gambon, Peter Hall, win theatre awards

Veteran actor Michael Gambon won a lifetime achievement honour at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards over the weekend, as did Royal Shakespeare Company founder and director Peter Hall.

Gambon, 70, picked up the Lebedev Special Award, having recently received rave reviews for his performance in Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape. He is best known as Albus Dumbledore in the blockbuster Harry Potter movies.

Director Hall, 80, received the Moscow Art Theatre's Golden Seagull for his contribution to the world of stage.

Other winners included Rory Kinnear as best actor for his performances in Measure for Measure and Hamlet, and Nancy Carroll as best actress for After the Dance.

- Natasha Richardson Award for best actress: Nancy Carroll for After the Dance
- Best play: Bruce Norris for Clybourne Park
- Ned Sherrin Award for best musical: Passion
- Best director: Howard Davies for The White Guard and All My Sons
- Best design: Miriam Buether for Sucker Punch and Earthquakes in London
- Charles Wintour Award for most promising playwright: Anya Reiss for Spur of the Moment
- Milton Shulman Award for outstanding newcomer: You Me Bum Bum Train created by Kate Bond and Morgan Lloyd
- Shooting star: Daniel Kaluuya for Sucker Punch
- Lebedev Special Award: Michael Gambon
- Moscow Art Theatre''s Golden Seagull: Peter Hall.
