Spreading awareness about Satyajit Ray's works

Very few characters in the world of cinema arouse such discussion like Apu. The character created by Indian maestro Satyajit Ray on celluloid has mesmerized audiences and cinema lovers worldwide. And one such discussion will take place at NCPA from today. Needless to say, the Apu Trilogy will also be screened.

Taj Enlighten Film Society which has been promoting world cinema to the audiences in Mumbai is holding the screening of Satyajit Ray’s most famous work, the Apu Trilogy at NCPA from today, tomorrow and the day after. Since the three films have admirers in all strata of film connoisseurs, there will be discussion by film scholars along with the movie too.

The Apu Triolgy which consists of three films namely Pather Panchali (song of the little road), Aparajito (the unvanquished) and Apur Sansar (the world of Apu) depicts the journey of a village boy Apu from his childhood to adulthood. Highly acclaimed worldwide as one of the greatest films ever, it forms an important part of Satyajit Ray’s canon.

The society has screened some of Ray’s masterpieces like Agantuk (the stranger), Jalsaghar (the music room) and Charulata (the lonely wife) as a part of the celebration of Ray’s 89th birth anniversary at two suburban theatres. And no Ray festival is complete without the Apu Trilogy. So, it’s just an extension of the fest.

Pranav Ashar, President of the Taj Enlighten Film Society said, “Since we began our film society, we have had many requests to do a Satyajit Ray film festival. We have never received such a response immediately after announcing a festival. After screening three of his masterpieces with overwhelming response, we decided to extend and enhance the experience of the festival by adding the famous Apu Trilogy.”

He further adds, “Ironic but it’s a fact that Ray’s status as a filmmaker is far bigger and better than the ones in Mumbai. Despite being a regional filmmaker, he placed Indian cinema on the world map. And our festival is an attempt to increase the awareness of his cinematic genius among young people who have not come across his films.”
