Richard Gere in 'I Am Kalam' director's contemporary epic?

After the award-winning film I Am Kalam, director Nila Madhab Panda’s second outing Jal Pari — The Desert Mermaid is already making waves at international film festivals. The film that is centred on the issue of female foeticide was recently screened at the Marche Du Cannes at the Cannes Film Festival.

Like his first film, this one also has a child protagonist, a Delhi-based girl who along with her brother goes to discover life in a village.

“Though the issue dealt with in the film is serious, it’s an adventure film essentially, seen through the eyes of a child. The story revolves around the girl’s search for water in the village, which leads to a larger, darker plot,” explains Panda, who finds it extremely comfortable to work with kids. “Unlike adults who have a lot of prejudices, kids come with no baggage and are completely spontaneous. Since I myself am like a child it becomes even easier to direct them,” says the director. The film is slated to release next month.

Meanwhile, Panda has already started work on his next film, which will be a contemporary epic. An Australian-Dutch production, the director is looking at roping in Richard Gere for a pivotal role.

“I need one senior Hollywood actor. Though I have yet to speak to Gere I am hoping to get him on board,” reveals the director.
