If there is still an audience out there for MTV style, Bakra humour and chaotic comedy, then Fruit & Nut would be aimed at them.

Cyrus Broacha plays Jolly Maker, a middle-class loser who gets caught up in a plot to save Mantralaya from being bombed by corrupt Khandhar Zhala (Mahesh Manjrekar) and insane Maharaja Harry Holkar (Boman Irani). All because Jolly wants to rescue the woman he loves, Monica (Diya Mirza). There are RAW agents, geriatric hit-men, mad scientists obsessed with veg pizzas and many, many toilet jokes.

The screenplay and dialogues (Sharat Kataria) are largely a let down though there are moments, like Manjrekar's character who literally translates from Hindi to English so for 'Tum takleef kyon utha rahe ho' he says 'why are you lifting trouble'. He constantly uses the wrong words and pretends to speak English, for instance referring to Maharaja Harry Holkar as 'Your Sinus'. The film's message of corruption, decline and disregard for the city that was once Bombay is lost in the toilet humour and hammed performances.

There is only so much of Mr Bean you can take - about 30 minutes is fine. Similarly there is only so much of accident-prone loser Jolly Maker one can take. A 30-minute TV show, or a stand up comedy routine, suits Broacha and Vijayakar's antics best. On the upside, Attar Singh Saini's cinematography, Boman Irani's enthusiastic madness as he asks 'Nashta kiya? Break-fast?' and Diya Mirza's brave decision to be a part of this lunacy.
