Reflections of Burma

If you are an art fanatic, head to Renaissance Gallerie this week as they showcase a special called Burmese Expressions to quench your creative thirst.

Reflections of Burma

If you have been curious, like us, about the culture of Burma, you can indulge your creative curiosity at this exhibition celebrating everything Burma. Showcasing 55 Burmese paintings, Burmese Expressions at the Renaissance Gallerie promises you a visual treat.

Ask Puja Genomal Kirpalani, art teacher of Creative Cabana who’s also curating the show — why Burmese paintings and pat comes the reply, “The Burmese are coming out of their shell finally after years of being suppressed due to their oppressive political regime.”

Giving a brief history of the art scene in Burma, she elaborates, “Modernist paintings in Burma had died out after a brief period of experimentation in the 1960s and 1970s, mostly due to lack of local support and this allowed for a full flowering of realism, naturalism and imperialism. The paintings (in the exhibition) depict traditional, spiritual and abstract themes,” she explains.

Talking about what she hopes to achieve through the exhibition, Puja says and concludes, “I hope to bring awareness to the Indian consumer with regard to South East Asian art from Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia, Beijing, Laos and Philippines.”

The featured artists in the exhibition are Ye Myint, Zaw Oo, Yaychan, Shwe Ni Tun, Mann Zar Hein and Zay Zay. Most of these artists have studied at State School of Fine Arts, Yangon.

Be at Renaissance Gallerie, 13, Cunningham Road, 11am to 1pm, the exhibition closes on Sunday, call 2202232
