Now, filmmakers sing a different tune

Until  recently they were known for their directorial talent; however not content with directing films alone, several filmmakers have now taken to wielding the music batons too.

While filmmakers Gulzar and Vishal Bharadwaj have always balanced their musical side with directing, it’s only off late that directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and even editor-turned-director Shirish Kunder have turned music directors.

While Bhansali composed the entire album of his recent Hrithik Roshan-starrer, Kunder has lent the  music to the title track of  Tees Maar Khan. Also revealing his musical skill is director Ram Gopal Varma who’s lent his voice to his forthcoming Vivek Oberoi-starrer.

Trade analysts attribute this trend to the fact that the above-mentioned filmmakers are known to have tremendous technical knowledge about music. Trade analyst Amod Mehra points out that filmmakers like Kishore Kumar and Guru Dutt were known for their keen musical sense.

“Off late, even Farhan Akhtar has proven that a director can hit the right notes as he did with Rock On.”

Kunder admits that it wasn’t easy, but “I did understand the requirement and composed keeping that in mind.” Having composed the backdrop music for his film Jaan-e-man in the past, it was also something that came to him naturally.

Surprisingly, the trend has not ruffled any feathers among the music directors. Musician duo Vishal Shekhar says,  “As long as it’s good music, why should anyone be complaining,” asks Shekhar.

Vishal adds, “Several fillmakers and even actors have amazing musical sensibilities and if they want to put that talent to good use, then why not?” And this, considering the audiences aren’t complaining about the filmmakers hitting the high notes on screen either. So bring it on!
