No marriage for Abhay Deol

Actor Abhay Deol has been in the news lately for his personal life, more specifically his relationship with girlfriend, actress Preeti Desai. While the actor has always been vocal about her, he was never really comfortable discussing his personal life in print. But now, Abhay is working with Preeti in Shaadi of the Dead, a film about zombies at a Punjabi wedding.

Talking about their screen venture together, Abhay says, “Preeti plays a cameo in the film, and it wasn’t something I recommended. I usually give her my scripts to read and she loved this one. She loved Navdeep Singh’s last film, Manorama Six Feet Under as well. Luckily there was a part, which required a cameo appearance and Preeti decided to do it. The moment she read the script she told me, ‘I could totally play this part’. She spoke to Navdeep and they decided amongst themselves that she fit the bill and was on board. It is a funny role and she is quite a fun person in real life as well.”

So considering she is new to the Hindi film industry, does he give her tips to the kind of films she should take up here? “Well, sometimes... but I think she’s quite good. In whatever little space she got in Shor in the City, she was a natural. She is not camera conscious and that is a huge plus point for any newcomer,” he says.

Now that Abhay has agreed to be seen with his girlfriend on screen, is he now also open to making it official with her off it too?

“There is so much speculation all the time about my life. Everyone wants to know if I am getting married, engaged, broken up or what. When we had just started out there was too much mystery about us but I have never hidden my relationship ever. I am in a good space, but no marriage bells as yet,” he winks.

Finally we ask him to rate himself — as a boyfriend and an actor? “Preeti likes my films and the roles that I do, but to know if I am a better boyfriend or a better actor, you will have to ask her.”
