Music and spirituality: Playing to a new gallery

While singers say music is their spiritual connect to God, other professionals too are known to harbour a passion for music that sees them running parallel careers...well almost.

Music and spirituality: Playing to a new gallery

Music’s the universal language of love. While this belief’s been in existence since longer than we can remember, it holds true as much even today.

Our culture too reflects that and has been a silent witness to the strong bonds forged over music, across boundaries and overlapping all discriminations.

Well, not surprisingly, our films are all about songs and music too! From a child to an adult, there’s none who wouldn’t respond to the call of a tune. Science, both modern and spiritual too have emphasised on the various benefits music can have on our mental well-being.

According to Sufi singers Kailash Kher and Rekha Seth,  “Music has the power to move the soul and stir them to rise towards a higher goal in life and closer to the Supreme Being.”

But while all singers would agree to have found inner peace through their music, there are several from professions that one would hardly associate with music who’ve taken their interest in music far beyond them being mere listeners.

For them it’s not a channel of entertainment alone, but a medium of finding that inner solace that their otherwise hectic lives make it a luxury hard to afford.

Ace photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha is known for capturing picture-perfect moments on his camera, but not many are aware that it is music that his heart also beats for and he’s been learning classical music for quite sometime now. In fact, among his friend circles, he’s known to have a keen sense of sur too.

Bollywood beauties Priyanka Chopra and Juhi Chawla too are known to have strong musical inclinations.

“Music is an outlet for me, an instant stress-buster,” reveals Chopra. Hrithik Roshan too is an avid music buff. And actor Neil Nitin Mukesh who’s also trying his hand at music says that it opens the gates for spirituality for him.

“Music kind of opens the doors to our inner selves. I definitely feel more connected to myself when I dabble in music. That’s also why inspite of being an actor, I can’t let go of my love for music.”

It’s no different for celebrity lawyer Vibhav
Krishna either. Colleagues may know him as the no-nonsense lawyer in court, but for friends he is also a singer. “Our profession is what we do for the food on our plates, music is the food for our soul,” sums up the lawyer-cum-writer who even has a hit album to his credit. Kailash Kher agrees.

“Music frees our soul by giving an outlet to our emotions,” he adds. And music buffs across the globe would agree.
