Aiming to build a research centre on Indian Cinema, Government has earmarked an outlay of Rs 42 crore in the 11th Plan period for a Museum of Moving Images (MOMI), which is to come up in Mumbai by 2010.

Sources in the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting told PTI that the museum would be third in the world after the similar ones in New York and London.

It is to come up on a 25 acre campus in Mumbai, and the project would involve construction of a new building, sources said, adding that the said work is being handled by National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC).

A senior ministry official said that the detailed project report (DPR) that was submitted by NBCC for MOMI has already been approved.

The upcoming museum would not only encapsulate the socio-cultural history of India but also exhibit works of noted directors, producers and institutions for the benefit of visitors and film enthusiasts.

The museum would also arrange seminars and workshops for film makers and film students, apart from having a multiplex, manuscript complex, animation theatre and infrastructure for film production.

Minister for information and broadcasting Ambika Soni last week had undertaken a review meeting of the project and had been briefed about the progress of the MOMI.
