More than a star wife

A star wife should be seen and not heard, is an unwritten rule in B-Town. Even actresses have been known to give up flourishing careers for their better halves.

But the current first wives club is doing their own version of rule-bending, and carving a niche for themselves outside of their famous husbands’ shadows. While some are enjoying a flourishing career, another lot enjoys an equal fan following and media attention as their husbands.

One of the first who comes to mind is former actor Twinkle Khanna. The daughter, who should’ve made a killing in histrionics with a powerhouse gene pool of parents, actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, chose to quit acting when she married action star Akshay Kumar.

She gradually took to becoming an interior designer, an extension of her childhood interest that had led to her working in an architectural firm before stepping into acting.

The passion and creativity stayed on with Twinkle, who’s now a proud owner of an interior designing company. She also owns a high end home decor store, which incidentally also retails candles made by mum Dimple Kapadia.

Interior designing was a hobby for Tanya Deol (actor Bobby Deol’s wife) too, but today she’s a successful interior designer and a jewellery designer as well.

Gauri Khan, rightfully the queen of the first wives club, is known to fiercely keep away from the media glare, but that has only made her more sought after in the world of glamour.

Not only has she walked the ramp for a fashion show, but has been declared the ambassador for a home decor product. She’s also actively involved in Shah Rukh’s films and is a part producer of his production company.

Hrithik Roshan’s wife Suzanne decided to take centre stage recently, after years of famously avoiding the media attention. She’s all set to inaugurate her own interior designing store in Bandra. Sanjay Kapoor’s wife, Maheep Kapoor, on the other hand is a jewellery designer and recently showcased her creations at the jewellery week.

Farhan Akhtar’s wife, Adhuna, has always been a popular hairstylist by profession even before marriage.  Her clientele reads like a list of the who’s who in B-Town.
