Looking the part

Debutante Swara Bhaskar says she lost out on roles because of her ‘intelligent looks’.

Looking the part

Actor Swara Bhaskar will soon make her movie debut in a movie that highlights the struggle of a lower middle-class family based in the city.

The film has been showcased at and nominated by several international film festivals and Swara is very excited.

Tell the dusky beauty that she has unconventional looks and she agrees. "I've lost out on so many roles because I looked 'too intelligent'," she laughs.

But not one to be deterred, Swara who has a theatre background has also bagged her first commercial entertainer and will share screen space with the likes of Kangna Ranaut, Madhavan and Eijaz Khan.

"At the end of the day, looks don't really matter because it is up to the stylists and make-up artists to make you look like the part," says Swara.

Talking about her debut film, she says, "I play the protagonist’s daughter. Coming from Delhi, my biggest challenge was to get used to Bambaiya Hindi," says Swara who was taken aback with the city's over-crowded public transport system. But now she has made her peace with Mumbai.

Swara also counters the allegation that the movie was noticed at international film festivals because it depicted India in a poor state saying, "Contrary to what some people are saying, the film is not about a 'poor India' but about the struggles of a family. In fact those who have seen the film have said that it is depicting a real story by keeping the dignity of the class intact," she ends.
