Let’s change Sandalwood for the better

Film-maker and After Hrs guest editor Prashanth Raj talks about problems plaguing the Kannada film industry.

Let’s change Sandalwood for the better

The film industry is a tough ride, especially for new film-makers. There is an extremely long route to making the movie one wants to. The Kannada film industry, though has interesting films in its kitty, still struggles from the fact that it is controlled by a few people, who hold the reigns very tightly.

Making a film is a creative process that involves out-of-box thinking, using new techniques and experimenting with newer stories and themes. When a film-maker starts on a new project, the struggle begins right from signing good lead actors, who come up with their own dos and don’ts for the film. It then shifts from choosing the technicians and sometimes even tweaking the script according to what suits the actors’ image or the producer or distributor’s demand.

After all of that, once a film is made, it is a fight to get it screened properly. The distribution channels of a film are controlled and if a film has box office shortfall even for a day, which can be due to natural or man-made circumstances, it is taken off from the theatres.

It is not even given the chance to do well. Sadly, the bigger the actor, producer, distributor of a film, the more problem the maker faces. So much internal conflict and red tape is only hurting the industry. When a film is being made, the maker should be given a lot of independence to put it together. Instead what happens is that everyone is out to grab instant gratification.

I really wish there is more freedom for film-makers in the industry here, to make the films they want to, in the way the want to. Also, as an industry we should unite to make the process smooth-flowing, instead of wasting time in petty politics. I hope we change for the better, as we grow further.
