'Jodi Breakers': Come, watch this new couple

With a few days to the release of Jodi Breakers, director Ashwini Chaudhary is savouring these last moments of sweet anxiety. And he refuses to give in to pressure, as it goes against the moral of his light-hearted rom-com.

Undoubtedly, the film, targeting the youngsters, looks like a crowd-puller. “We realised that the title was like a window to the film — hence, wanted something that wasn’t just different, but one that stood far apart from the rest. And Jodi Breakers suited the script perfectly. Personally, I like the ring to the name,” he explains.

Of course, an inevitable question is the unusual pairing in the film. Says the film-maker, “Bipasha (Basu) and Madhavan haven’t worked together before. Since the audience hadn’t seen them together, their on screen chemistry seems pretty unpredictable. That was more reason to sign them on.” Also, neither of the actors have starred in a hardcore romantic comedy in a while and Ashwini had to take extra care to shape their characters to save an image hangover from any earlier film. “For instance, seeing Madhavan sing and shake a leg with a bevy of beautiful women around him is definitely a first. And what’s even better is that he was extremely cooperative when we were working out his on screen character,” he informs.

Jodi Breakers deals with relationships in present time and has been shot extensively in Mumbai, Goa and Greece. “If you look around, you’re bound to come across instances of dysfunctional relationships. And such connect with the audience is very important. The success of any film depends on this economics — they smell out a good product effortlessly,” states Ashwini. In fact, it’s this belief that pushed the makers to filming a special number, Bipasha, after the shooting was over. “We thought of having some extra zing and conceptualised this song. Of course, it was a deliberate move to keep a song titled after Bipasha. And with the way it has been received, I think we thought correct,” quips the director.

Ashwini prefers to be practical. “It’s important to be on the right track — that includes a tight script, good actors and some exciting music. We are in times when even the promos can decide the fate of a film,” he ends.
