Is Mumbai becoming more child-friendly?

How do you manage your kids when you are out shopping or eating out? In most cases, a bored toddler is hanging on to the arm of a harassed mother whining he or she wants to go home. It’s only a lucky few who can leave their children at home with their family on trips outside. Unless, of course, the city becomes more child-freindly.

Taking sides

Yes I certainly feel India is becoming more child-friendly. A mall in Andheri, for example, has a special place where toddlers are taken care of by ladies while the mothers go shopping. They charge for every 30 minutes and I think it’s a great idea as it helps you to concentrate on your shopping.

I do not feel India has developed too much in this respect. Though I think it will be a good idea to encourage facilities and services for kids in public spaces. In most cases kids can create a nuisance not only for parents but also to others while busy.

According to me India is still in the process of acquiring better facilities as far as this issue is concerned. Of course, there are malls, hotels and even offices that provide such services, but if you compare it to foreign cities, it is still in its infancy. Probably a few years ahead we will get to see such progression.

I haven’t seen much of it in India. Even if I have it has been of negative impact on me. I find it risky. At one of the malls the lady in charge was cutting the identification band on a child’s hand and chatting away. I think the people hired should have the expertise.

Such conveniences are only seen in well-developed places. The reason might be that most couples prefer carting their kids along. It’s not easy to just leave them with unknown faces.

In some places there are provisions to take your kids along in a more comfortable way. Like prams or even your food trolleys have a seat specially meant for toddlers, so it’s safer and your child enjoys the ride too.

Name one place which you think is child-friendly

The Cine Planet multiplex in Sion has a baby care and play centre. When I go there for films, and my child gets cranky, the play centre helps. But you have to ensure that the place is hygienic and safe for the kid.

Initially when R-mall in Mulund started they had a baby play area. But then I think a lot of people have aversions towards using these facilities so I guess it shut down. Also Center One at Vashi has a play area for babies that is very convenient. I can peacefully finish my shopping.

Most places abroad are child-friendly. I really like the chain stores in South Africa that have such provisions.

Wow - words of wisdom

When it comes to India any play area whether they are in malls or hotels are far from being child friendly.  Abroad is a different story all together. With sealed places, speakers and excellent hygiene you are at peace. In fact every store inside the mall have their own play area.
