‘I’m a born rebel: Kangna Ranaut

Kangna talks about daring to be different, both in the choice of her roles and styles.

‘I’m a born rebel: Kangna Ranaut

Performances apart, if there’s anything that actor Kangna Ranaut has managed to earn brownie points for, then it’s her stylish sense of dressing. And the actor herself admits that initially, people did find it hard to believe that a small-town girl coming from a non-filmi background could dress the way she did. “Even as a kid, I would love to dress up and show off,” reveals Kangna. “Just like my roles, I’ve never been afraid to experiment with my looks either. I love taking risks. In fact, I think I’m a born rebel too and it reflects in everything I do — be it in roles or clothes. I think part of fun in being an actor is getting to be a different person with each role and I really believe that a strong sense of character comes from the way we dress,” says Kangna.

The actor, who’s known to be extremely involved in the styling department for her roles, had apparently taken a keen personal interest when readying for her role of a glamourous actress in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai. “Yes, I had gone through loads of magazines and books and even films to capture the look of the heroines of that era. Not only from Bollywood, but Hollywood as well,” she reveals, adding that her style for the film was actually inspired by actors right from Audrey Hepburn there to Sadhana here.

Now, buzz is that for her role in the upcoming Shootout At Wadala too, the actor’s not leaving any look unchecked to make sure that she looks convincing playing a simple Maharashtrian middle-class girl. “Well, in the film, my character goes from the age 15 to 30, and to look convincing as an older character, I’m looking at a lot of actors like Shabana Azmi and Rekha. I think they were amazing the way they portrayed realism on screen,” adds Kangna.

Though it may seem like tedious preparations, Kangna feels that it’s a chance to revisit the old times. “I think actors were very sexy back then. They could look so sensuous in a simple sari, and had embraced their curves better than most can today,” says the actor, talking about yesteryear actors. “There was certain elegance and charm in them, and they were very feminine too,” adds Kangna.

But ask her if she would have wanted to have been an actor in that era and she waves it off. “No, I’d rather bring those traits in this era itself,” she laughs. “I think now is a great phase to be an actor in. And I’m more than happy doing the kind of roles that I am, so no, no complaints about that,” she smiles
