‘I’d love to invite Aishwarya Rai to my salon’

With Oscar fever in the air, hairstylists Rossano Ferretti, and Orlando Pita elaborate on working magic on Hollywood’s Penelope Cruz and Lady GaGa.

‘I’d love to invite Aishwarya Rai to my salon’

Hollywood is known to set trends, be it in the wardrobe, hair or make-up department. And celebrity hairstylist Rossano Ferretti, who has styled international beauties like Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz and, more recently, Lady GaGa gives us a sneak peek into their secrets.

Talking about some envied Hollywood tresses, he reveals that Penelope’s mom has a hairdressing salon of her own which is why the actor is well-versed with hair herself. Her dark hair, he adds, is healthy and usually styled with a bit of flirty curls toward the ends. Salma Hayek, says the hairstylist has thick hair and she’s experimental, so it’s fun to style her hair. Lady GaGa, says Ferretti likes to make a statement which is why he is most excited to style the music icon.

Ferretti is, however, not the only one who got a slice of celebrity backstage action this season. Hairstylist Orlando Pita worked his magic on celebrities like Julianne Moore for the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards.

“I get creative with what I do, but I’m just a hairdresser. But, yes, a bad haircut will put you in a mad mood for several weeks,” says Pita on the domino effect of a bad hair day.

Ask Ferretti which Indian celebrity he’d like to style and he replies, “I’m familiar with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as an international star and would love to invite her to my salon in New York.” The stylist, who has visited the country before, feels Indians are blessed with the best hair.

“Internationally, most have thin, flat or frizzy hair, but Indians are blessed with lustrous, flowy and thick hair. Warm colours complement Indian women,” he says, adding, “Most Indian women have clean, angular faces and if the lady has a modern approach, a bob would work well.”

Ferretti also doesn’t believe in trends. “Each one has to develop his or her own style. But there are classics for timeless chic — look at Naomi Campbell for inspiration with her straight, long hair... it works every time,” he concludes.
