I’d like my music to be hummed by autowallahs: Raghu Dixit

His music has garnered worldwide acclaim. And as the maverick defines his sound, it seems to be true Indian fervour married to global melodies and blending to form fresh tunes. “My
music is true representation of what India is,” says Raghu.

The singer was recently invited to perform on the show Later...with Jools Holland. And after the show aired, Raghu Dixit’s eponymous
debut album shot up to the No. 1 World Music album on iTunes UK.

After having made a name worldwide, Raghu is now drifting towards Bollywood music, which he thinks is fast evolving. “In the last two years there are brand new directors coming up with bolder themes and producers who are funding such projects and even the audiences are lapping it up. Movies like Peepli Live, Dev D, Oye Lucky..., Black Friday, etc. were fabulous and I think that’s the kind of space where my music fits in.” Raghu had done one song for the movie Quick Gun Murugan, which was shown in international film festivals as well.

Besides celebrated names like Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap, he is also keen on working with “young, fresh directors just out of film schools”. The musician, who was initially averse to the Bollywood style of music, is now all in awe of it. “I realise that something I was so averse to, is actually so much fun. For instance, Vishal Dadlani belts out Pentagram songs which are hardcore rock indie music but at the same time he does something like a 'Sheila Ki Jawani'..that’s the versatility of a musician.”

What is his biggest aspiration as a musician? Replies Raghu, “I’d like my songs to be hummed by a autowallahs.”

Raghu picked up the guitar in second year of BSc and by the time he finished his MSc he had already penned down five compositions. “My story is very much like Chuck Berry’s. He used to hang out in the park where the older boys used to play the guitar and impress girls. Though he never got a babe, he managed to get a guitarist any way.”
