Food and festivals go hand in hand. And like all others, this festive gala too comes with its own special foodie feast! However, apart from the traditional khichdi and til ladoos associated with the first festival of the new year, city restaurants and food joints have come up with some unconventional Makar Sankranti cakes, cupcakes and desserts, etc.

As the festival is synonymous with kite flying, kite cakes —cakes with images of a kid flying kite are very popular. “We have launched some special offerings this year on the eve of Makar Sankranti. People, here and abroad, can gift the special Makar Sankranti Cake, Special Til Ladoos and special Til Gajak to their loved ones,” says, Viren Ghole, marketing head of Monginis Foods, adding that they’ll be available over the counter or even on their website.

Online food portal DeliveryChef.in too has some pretty cupcakes and cakes to offer. “We believe in celebrating all the festivals with loads of love, fun and food. We welcome the first festival of the year with special Makar Sankranti cupcakes and cakes,” says Aditi Talreja, entrepreneur and owner of the site.

The unconventional sweet offerings don’t stop at just cupcakes. Ravi Sharma, owner of Crepe Station, suggests  special saffron waffles for the occasion, which also happen to be his personal favourite. “Besides, we have also introduced special winter muffins for the festival,” he reveals.

Chef Prashant Sabne, Pastry Chef at Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel is preparing fusion sweets like sesame and jaggery chocolate and  sesame milifilli — layered chocolate pastry with sesame tuiles, for Makar Sankrant this year. So, this year, you can fly kites and eat them too!
