I saw Gandhi in Aung San Suu Kyi: Luc Besson

Actor Milla Jovovich’s former husband, the critically acclaimed French filmmaker Luc Besson says that he saw Mahatma Gandhi in controversial pro-democracy leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi. Besson — who has previously made films like The Fifth Element and Nikita — was the only filmmaker who has dared to make a film on the 66-year-old Burmese opposition figure, who has just been freed after 15 years of continuous house arrest. Suu Kyi still remains under close supervision by the Burma’s regime.

A couple of days before his arrival in Goa alongwith actor Michelle Yeoh (who plays Suu Kyi in the film), Luc in an emailer to DNA, said, “First off, before I even met her, I wanted her to know about the project. After trying for three months, we managed to get a message to her. When I finally met her, I felt like I was standing before Gandhi. A person can’t help but feel small and silly in the face of this woman who radiates extraordinary kindness, gentleness and simplicity.”

According to Luc, the fearlessness of the autocratic British regime which was the trademark in Gandhi, was a part of Suu Kyi’s character too. “She fears nothing. For her, not even 60 years of prison would change a thing. What’s important to her is that her people be free to share the riches of their country. She has no personal stake. It’s a lesson in humility. Once you’ve met her you won’t dare complain for five years to come!” he exclaims.

So, what did they talk about? According to Luc, Suu Kyi was curious about his plans. “You want to know all about her, and all she does is ask about you. She is curious, and hasn’t even any interest in doing a book about her own life. She is an admirable person,” he says.

Coincidentally, Aung San Suu Kyi, the Noble Laureate has been conferred with the Mahatma Gandhi Award for Peace and Reconciliation in Durban in the year 2009.
