I don’t run after celebrities: Wendell Rodricks

Wendell Rodricks will be showcasing his new line inspired from water in the ongoing Lakmé Fashion Week.

The Goa-based designer, who will be marking the pre-finale show tomorrow in Mumbai, is all set to showcase his Himalayan Live Natural collection.

Known for his silhouettes and innovative designs, this time around Wendell has worked with organic and natural sources of fabrics.

“The different aspects of water will be translated in the collection — from purity to the sparkling nature of mountain water. We have kept the dress lengths realistic, which is what real women want to wear. The hair, makeup and look are all inspired by water and ice.

The modish outfits would be elegantly paired with chic footwear and the ramp and decor at the show will reflect the mood,” he explains.

Giving us further insight about his collection, he says, “My creation draws inspiration from explosion of life and motion that denotes water in its purest form.

The collection will be an amalgam of pastel shades and fuchsia, complementing the innovative shapes and designs, all made from natural and organic materials.”

Probe him about earth-friendly fabrics and he says, “I was among the first to experiment with organic fabrics. I have done that since 1991. Though cotton and wool are earth-friendly materials, a lot of people use cheaper fabrics. Nevertheless, there is a lot of awareness now and it is becoming more of a trend. They are all natural and one shouldn’t complain about prices, when buying eco-friendly fabrics.”

With back to back fashion shows happening across the country, a lot of designers grumble, saying it’s taxing. What is his take? “A designer must decide well in advance about the shows he is participating in.

I concentrate only on the two big shows — in Delhi and in Mumbai. There are several shows, which are done purely for entertainment, while there are shows aimed at a different market altogether. It is the designer’s call whether to take them up or not,” he says.

Several fashion weeks also see a number of young and aspiring fashion designers showcasing their collection. What does he have to say about the sudden increase?

“Do something from your heart and be ready for a long run. A lot of aspiring designers start with a bang, but get tired after a while. There needs to be consistency and patience, only then can they break through,” advises Wendell.

Though a lot of celebrities swear by his collection, Wendell says he targets a different audience altogether. “I am the kind of supplier who targets average business women. Though a lot of stars are my friends and have a unique style sense of their own, I don’t run after them,” he signs off.
