I am the surprised package: Vir Das

Vir Das was supposed to be the surprise package in the latest film starring Shahid Kapoor.

He says that he is the “surprised package” after the film got the box office cash registers ringing. The accolades aside, Vir knows that his life is going to change from here.

“I actually consider this as my launch into Bollywood because in Love Aaj Kal, it was a very small role. Thankfully, I am getting few offers now. But right now, I am focused on Delhi Belly and Tanuja Chandra’s next,” says Vir.

The actor might not necessarily sound the death knell for the comedian in him but Vir admits that with a soaring film career graph, his stand-up comedy act will have to take the hit.

“Yes, with back-to-back film shootings and at a time when you are giving more importance to your film career, the other career will obviously take a hit. Considering that I am a professional stand-up comedian, my returns (earnings) will obviously suffer. I know that I might not be able to do as many (stand-up comedy) acts as I want to do if I focus on acting, but I guess my losses might be less as my fees might go up now,” chuckles Vir, hastening to add on a serious note, “I have not done stand-up acts or acting because I need money. It’s not for the love of money, that’s for sure.”

Vir says that he wanted to prove for a long time that he is also comfortable in Hindi in his comedy as well.

“I am an English stand-up comedian and I am equally comfortable in Hindi as well. It’s a standard misconception about me that I am uncomfortable with Hindi on the stage. Arrey yaar, I am a Delhi boy and I am totally at home cracking jokes in Hindi too. I think Chandu(his character) has cleared the misconception about me. Because everywhere people are now telling me, ‘Thoda Chandu bankar dikha na!’” ends Vir.
