GenNext in B-Town is mighty shy when it comes to declaring love openly. DNA explores why.

Hush is mush for Bollywood couples

Youth everywhere is perceived to be bold and honest. Yet when it comes to matters of the heart, today’s young Bollywood brigade appears to go coy. They zip their lips the moment they anticipate a little nudge into their personal world.

Most leading couples, who are apparently dating right now, not only have an aversion to acknowledging their fiances in public, they sometimes even go to the extent of denying their relationships.

“Whether I want to accept my relationship status or not is not the point. I just don’t want to talk about it. There are so many things in this world that I want to talk about, but I don’t want to talk about my personal life,” justifies actress Priyanka Chopra when she is asked about her reported beau, actor Shahid Kapoor.

Even actress Katrina Kaif feels that one’s personal life should be strictly out of bounds for the general public. “It doesn’t matter what others think. I am here for a cause and definitely not to tell you who I am dating currently. I would always talk about the thing I am here for (referring to movies) and not about anything else,” she retorts.

Other actresses like Deepika Padukone and Genelia D’Souza have always maintained the ‘no comments’ stance even though they are often spotted with their reported beaus at public events.

According to people close to the actors, one prime reason why most actors choose to clamp up is because of the uncertainty involved in tinseltown relationships. “These days, relationships don’t last that long. One never knows whether a relationship will stand the test of time. The last actor who publicly declared her love was Padukone and look… not only did she end up losing her boyfriend, she also had to change the tattoo on the nape of her neck that had become a constant source of irritation for her,” says one of her former staff members.

Many actors make it apparent that they are dating just to ward off unwanted attention from their co-stars. “They just don’t want to open up about it, but they would otherwise behave like normal lovers — like attending private parties together, picking and dropping each other at airports and, of course, going on holidays together,” says a former staffer of a star.

Meanwhile, there are those actors who simply shrug off rumours. Actress Rani Mukherji, who has reportedly been dating film-maker Aditya Chopra for quite sometime now, never felt it necessary to clarify her relationship status. Actor Vidya Balan too seals her lips on the topic of her reported link-up with Siddharth Roy Kapoor, the head honcho of a production house.
