Hitting the right note

She can’t even wear a saree and doesn’t want to wear it too. And bindis, glass bangles and mehndi? Nah! It surely doesn’t work out for Hard Kaur. But as luck would have it, Hard has to wear all that for her movie debut.
“I am playing Akshay Kumar’s sister in the film Patiala House. And, can you imagine? I am playing a seedhi-saadhi
ladki in the film. In the film, I will be seen wearing sarees and salwars, which is just the opposite from what I wear in my daily life,” says Hard.
The pop singer admits that she wanted to add something more to her CV which just had her singing all this while. “It was a great offer because I kind of identified with the role. I play a girl who is a part of a small Indian family in the UK. The elders in the family had migrated to the UK in the sixties and they are far more conservative than an average Indian. So obviously, the girl living in that family will be forced to adhere to the conservative traditions of the family. That is exactly the dilemma that my character in the film faces everyday,” says Hard.
According to Hard, when she was abroad, she faced the same dilemma. “Not only in the UK, even in India, I was always told that I am very tomboyish. In a few cases, I was told that I am very aggressive. Some purists also pointed out that I am too Western. Well, this is how I am. When I was narrated the script, I felt, ‘this is me, man! This is what I have faced all my life. I so have to do the film!’ I immediately said ‘yes’ to the film.”
According to Hard, she and Akshay developed a great
rapport on the sets. “We have a song picturised in Picadilly Square in London. I guess that is my best moment in the film. It was such great fun acting with the guy because he lets you be yourself on the sets. He never lets that feeling sink in that you are acting with a star. And of course, Akshay has perfected his dancing skills over a period of time. So just watch out,” she declares.
