Gautam is my critic: Nawaz Modi Singhania

It has been over two years since she began her career as an artist. But Nawaz Modi Singhania is quite at ease wearing many hats — that of wife, mother and fitness expert, besides being an artist. Nawaz, who recently showcased her art collection in the city, talked about her art and inspirations and what it means to be Gautam Singhania’s wife to DNA.

One look at her paintings and her theme of dance, movement and spirituality become evident. “Art is predominantly an expression of the artist’s personality and tastes. The theme for my paintings is a reflection of my interests in dance and fitness, and a manifestation of my spiritual views. My paintings have vibrant hues and celebrate the human body in graceful dance postures,” Modi explains.

She continues, “There are several things that inspire me, including the human anatomy, women’s plight, beauty, perfection, the play of light and shadow, day and night, sport and speed, among several others. I’ve always been a very creative person. Even in the fitness industry, bringing newness, freshness and creativity to every aspect of my work is what keeps me motivated all the time.”

Ask her how she manages multi-tasking and she smiles, “I just love these varied roles. I wouldn’t want it any other way!” Nawaz reveals she has incorporated dancing in her fitness programmes too. Her spirituality quotient can’t be ignored either. “To me, spirituality is the state of coming into being and a sense of continuum combined together,” Modi explains.

Talking about her critic at home, she says, “That role is played by Gautam as of now. My daughter is around when I paint and is an observer.” She admits that her  daughter is her inspiration and helps bring in vibrancy to her works of art. “Also, with her around, my approach acquires more sensitivity, has greater depth and wisdom, and my communication is clearer,” Nawaz concludes.
