Eleventh Mumbai International Film Festival gets underway from Wednesday

The biennial Festival is organised by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in association with the Government of Maharashtra.

Eleventh Mumbai International Film Festival gets underway from Wednesday

The 11th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films (MIFF 2010) will be held from February 3 to 9 at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) complex in South Mumbai.

The biennial Festival is organised by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in association with the Government of Maharashtra.

Veteran film maker Yash Chopra will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony tomorrow. Union minister for information and broadcasting Ambika Soni will preside. Ajay Devgan, Tanushree Datta and Oscar Award winning sound recordist Resul Pookutty will also be present.

Naresh Bedi's documentary "On a Tiger Trail" and Shih-Ting Hung’s "Viola :The Traveling rooms of a little giant"  are the inaugural films. The 11th edition of the Festival received 864 entries from 37 countries.

The Competition Section includes—Documentary upto 30 minutes (12 films), Documentary over 30 minutes (17 films), Fiction upto 75 minutes (23 films), Animation (11 films). About 43 films are to be screened in the Non-Competition Section.

The highlight among the Retrospectives and Special Packages is a set of four films on Immigration issues from the Netherlands, eight Puppet films and ten films on women's issues.

There are ten films in the North East package. In the country focus, there are nine films from Bhutan and four from Argentina. Apart from the screenings, Open forums, full day seminars and other interactive sessions will be held.

The best short film / documentary (upto 30 minutes) will be awarded a Golden Conch and cash prize of Rs3,00,000. Another Golden Conch and Rs3,00,000 cash award will be given to the best film/ documentary over 30 minutes duration.

There are also awards for best animation film, fiction film and student’s film. Government of Maharashtra’s Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari will give a Trophy and Rs1,00,000 for best debut film of a director.
      
"Dr V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award”" will be given to MV Krishna Swamy for his contribution to documentary film movement. The award carries cash prize of Rs5 lakh.
