'DNA' explores number of Bollywood films premiered internationally

Actor Shah Rukh Khan’s recent release had not one premiere but three. Interestingly all three were abroad – in London, Toronto and Dubai and buzz is that his forthcoming Don 2 is also most likely to have an international premiere. Sachin Joshi’s acting debut Azaan too had its premiere in Dubai, while Akshay Kumar’s Speedy Singhs had a world premiere in Toronto. Double Dhamal premiered in Toronto as well. Apparently the Shahid

Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer Mausam too was to premiere in Toronto, but was called off due to running into clearance issues back home with the Indian Air Force. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ready are some of the other films that’ve had their premieres held abroad – in London and Dubai respectively. Though one does recall Raavan’s UK premiere or the premiere of My Name is Khan in Abu Dhabi, it is only of late that there seems to be a sudden surge in the Bolly brigade heading to foreign locales for the red carpet premieres.

“The idea is to cash in on the craze of the NRI audiences for Bollywood stars,” reveal filmmakers. “The Indian and Asian communities form a huge diaspora in places like Dubai and the UK. A huge turn-out is ensured, thanks to the Bollywood-struck fans out there, not to forget the international attention (including that of media) that these events draw,” points out trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Emphasisng on the need to showcase their films on a global platform, a star reveals that it’s a power statement to the peers and a way of letting the industry know the star’s popularity.

“Premieres here are not passe, but it’s a bigger statement to have a premiere held internationally. It’s almost a star power statement,” says the actor, who’s been a part of some of these films.

“The target,” adds a filmmaker, “is also to rope in at least one international celebrity to drop by. Whether it works out or not, trust us, the deals are always being negotiated.” Another insider offers another view. “It’s actually as simple as giving a chance to the NRI audiences to get a taste of Bollywood,” says the insider.

“Considering the overseas collections are as important in making or breaking a star, it’s only fair that they too get to hobnob with the Bolly brigade. That’s in fact, also the reason why so many awards functions too are being held abroad,” adds Taran.

A filmmaker reveals that a huge amount of monetary respite that the governments offer is an added bonus. “It’s a boost to the economy and the tourism, so lucrative discounts are offered ” says the filmmaker. “Besides, Bollywood is such a huge industry that everyone is naturally proud to associate with it. So, it works in the favour of the star, film, as well as local junta,” opines Taran. So pack your bags Bollywood, it’s phoren calling again!
