Designer Krishna Mehta is exploring the Kamasutra

When fashion designer Krishna Mehta labeled her new line as the Kama Sutra (KS) collection, little did she think that it would grab so many eyeballs. But it did, and Krishna’s not complaining. But ask her as to what prompted her to zero in on a KS theme collection and she lets us on to a surprisingly simple reasoning. “Because it is timeless and that is what this line depicts. It is not season or occasion specific. It is something you can wear year in and year out without getting bored of it,” says Krishna.

Krishna says that her focus was to create silhouettes that highlight the feminine structure and not in an obvious way. “In your face sexy is not very sensual at all! Showing skin and yet not showing probably is. Never open and bare,” suggests
Krishna.

Talking more about the collection, Krishna says that the focus was the textures and work done on the fabric itself and not typical embroideries. “It’s about the beautiful crafts and textures. I’ve used all Indian fabrics. I’ve chosen tussar silk for its beautiful flow, cotton muslins, cotton silk blended fabrics and other hand woven fabrics,” she reveals.

Ask her to elaborate on the link between the theme — Kamasutra and the line itself and Krishna says with a laugh, “Finding the link seems to have baffled many. But the link is just that apart from being timeless, the line concentrates on having something you enjoy and need to enjoy. The clothes explore the core of Indian textiles,” explains Krishna who got a few of her designs painted on different body types on postcards.

The colour palette again sticks to the basics and
explores soft and warm colours like beige, neutrals and burnt peaches and stays clear of cool colours, a feature that again emphasises that the garments are not subject to current trends at all!
