Daily soaps and their time leaps

If the twists and turns, multiple affairs in storylines on television shows fail, then what's the best possible way to regain the audience's attention? It's time for a time leap! When everything fails, the show producers introduce time leaps.

And why not as many a times they work wonders too. However the time period of the leaps can differ from short leaps to the usual generation leaps. And current period  seems to be the season of time leaps. Case in point are serials such as Phulwa, Uttaran, Choti si Zindagi and Na Anna Is Desh Laado, etc.

It's a natural progression for any show to take a leap, feels Ajay Bhalwankar, Programming Head Zee TV. He says, “We were dealing with a particular issue while the protagonists were children in Choti Si Zindagi. With them having grown up now, the dynamics of their relationship will change altogether. As kids, both the sisters very fond and fiercely protective about each other. Now, one will see a different facet of their relationship altogether.” 

Agrees Phulwa producer Siddharth Tewary, “The storyline of Phulwa is moving ahead. It’s a logical leap. Young Phulwa is growing as planned. Normally in shows leaps are done to get a new story as after a point audiences want to see a fresh story. The characters remain mostly same but a few are added too.”

Ashvini Yardi, Head of Programming, Colors says, “The only thing constant in this world is change. Age leaps are a natural progression to the storyline and with Balika Vadhu, Na Aana Is Des Laado and now with the Phulwa leap we only mirror a new chapter in our protagonists' lives with a refreshing outlook.”

Actor Angad Hasija whose character is going to die as per the requirement of the story in the show says, “Actors are scared of leaps as they will have to play the character of a father. However, I don’t have issues with leap at all.”
