The Coen brothers' film True Grit will open the Berlin International Film Festival in February, the festival said on Wednesday.

Academy Award-winning filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen's remake of the 1969 Western tells the story of a 14-year-old girl who searches for the man who murdered her father.

The film kicks off the annual 11-day festival on February 10.

True Grit stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Hailee Steinfeld and is scheduled to open in US cinemas on December 22. The original film stared legendary Hollywood actors John Wayne and Glen Campbell.

The Coen brothers are best known for their Academy Award-winning films Fargo (1996) and No Country for Old Men (2007) and their cult comedy The Big Lebowski (1998).

The 61st Berlinale, as the festival is called, will feature about 400 films, and culminate with the awarding of the Golden Bear prize to the festival's best film selected by a jury.
