At just 17 years of age, Anam Sadarangani looks like any other teenybopper. But for those in the know, there’s more to this young gal than her bubbling enthusiasm.

“However clichéd it may sound, I always wanted to do my bit for the society. So when an opportunity came my way, there’s no way I was going to miss it,” explains Anam, adding that she first started off by working with the NGO Salaam Balak and has been doing so since the past two years now.

“I realised that there are many street kids out there who deserve so much more; so I began with a class of around twenty kids. In fact, I’d teach them reading, writing, math and art during my summer holidays,” she elaborates.

But soon, she knew that she wanted to continue with this despite the vacations coming to an end. “So I started spending my Saturdays with them. Moreover, I moved on to teaching them art and craft.

Together with the kids, we even created some two thousand bags and around three thousand gift tags; they were then sold off for around 25000 rupees which went towards the upliftment of these kids.

We bought books, pencils, paper and lunches with the money,” reminisces Anam, who is a student of Dhirubhai Ambani International school.

As for her own future plans, she intends to go abroad for further studies. “I’ll be studying liberal arts and finance. When I come back, I intend to start my own business and I’m sure I’ll get back to these street kids,” she enthuses.

Ask her if she too will a float an organisation and she quips, “I’m too young to think so ahead into the future. But I will never give up on them - that’s for sure,” she signs off.
