Censor board’s tween offering

It’s just a matter of time before two new categories are introduced to end the woes of filmmakers like Madhur Bhandarkar who have officially expressed their displeasure at their films being branded as ‘adult’ films.

“We’ve worked out the proposal and the nitty gritties of introducing two more categories between Universal (U) and Adult (A) categories. The Information and Broadcasting ministry is principally open to the idea. I think the proposal will be passed very soon,” says Sharmila Tagore, the outgoing chief of the Censor Board.

Tagore admits to have been flooded with complaints from filmmakers, who were unhappy with the certification given to their films. “There have been several cases of filmmakers unhappy with the certification given to the film, but the problem is that the members of the Board are governed by certain rules and regulations that are universal and has to be followed,” says Tagore, adding that the only option left is to introduce two categories for a young category other than Children and Universal (U).

“The two proposed categories aims at teenagers (between 9 to 12 years) and young adults (13 to 17 years). The introduction of these two categories will provide a lot of relief to filmmakers who use expletives or nudity in the minimal. The ministry is keen to introduce these categories, but certain issues still dog the proposals and are being sorted out now,” says a source.

A lot of filmmakers have also approached Delhi and the Censor Board separately protesting against the certificates issued for their films, the most vocal being director Madhur Bhandarkar.

“Madhur has often expressed his frustrations about his films, including his last comedic venture Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji  being certified as ‘adult’. Prominent filmmakers like Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra have often suggested on several occasions that the rules need to be relaxed or new categories need to be introduced. The government wants to introduce these categories to end all woes,” says the source.
