Cause celebre gets some oomph

Sushmita Sen joins in as Mumbai’s crème de la crème gears up to an art and fashion extravaganza to help HIV and AIDS afflicted children

Cause celebre gets some oomph

This October, Mumbai’s crème de la crème will be privy to an art and fashion extravaganza that will have 100 artists from all over the country displaying exclusive canvases and Bollywood diva Sushmita Sen walking the ramp for New York-based designer Gazala.

The event, to be held at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower on October 1, is also Gazala’s debut in India. She had moved to New York after her marriage to Zakir Chinwalla and she returns to the city of her birth years after 26 long years.

The designer, who started her career with the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Olega Cassini, has been a successful model and was at one point of time the face of Bombay Dyeing. Adding to the glam quotient at the show will be the sultry Sushmita Sen, who will sashay down the ramp in a show-stopper outfit created specially for the occasion, along with leading models like Sheetal Malhar, Dipannita Sharma, Vidisha Pavate, Nina Manuel, Pia Trevedi, Aditi Gowitrikar, Diandra Soares and Fleur Xavier.

The proceeds of the event, put together by Verve magazine, will be used for the benefit of HIV affected children. Organisers said that the funds generated through corporates and other sponsors will directly go into the hands of Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT), which works closely with HIV and AIDS afflicted children.

Leading artists like MF Hussain, Anjolie Ela Menon, Jehangir Jani, Jehangir Sabavala and Jitish Kallat, among others, have also decided to lend a helping hand to the event. “Each artist has agreed to donate up to 40 to 60 percent of the sale proceeds to the CCDT,” said Nupur Mahajan Sinh, brand development director, Verve.
