Actor Govinda’s brother-in-law Praveen Khanna lodges a complaint with the police alleging that the actor threatened to kill him.

Case against Govinda for threatening to kill brother-in-law

Film producer Praveen Khanna, who is also Govinda’s brother-in-law, has filed a complaint against the actor at the Khar police station. The complaint against the actor includes allegations such as threat to kill, assault and criminal conspiracy.

The police authorities at the Khar police station too confirm that they have received the complaint and said that they will be investigating the matter. The police have already sought an appointment from Govinda to investigate the case, say sources.

“We have registered a non-cognisable offence against actor and former MP Govinda for allegedly abusing and threatening to kill a film producer during a meeting of the Indian Motion Pictures’ Producers Association (IMPPA) in Khar.

His jijaji (brother-in-law) has complained that Govinda threw tea and sandwiches at him during a heated conversation and then got up and bashed him up. The incident might seem funny, but the allegations are not,” says a police officer. The incident allegedly happened on August 24 at one of the regular IMPPA meeting near Pali Hill in Bandra West.

“Govinda abused me in the filthiest language and pushed aside the committee members of IMPPA. He tried to hit me with articles lying on the table. The members caught him and helped me get out of the room,” says the complaint filed by Praveen Khanna.

“We have received the written application and lodged non-cognisable offence against Govinda. But we have not called him for any inquiry,” senior police inspector Mangesh Pote of the Khar police station was quoted as saying.

The problem between the two allegedly started in 1996, when Khanna launched a film called Dil Laga Ke Dekho starring Govinda in the lead. Govinda allegedly refused to complete the shooting because Khanna couldn’t give him the acting fees that he wanted. The film was shelved in 2003. Khanna filed a complaint against the actor in 2009 with IMPAA, but he did not show up for any hearings until last week.

Govinda has frequently courted controversies because of his erratic behaviour. In 2008, Govinda had allegedly slapped a visitor on the sets of his film Money Hai Toh Honey Hai for misbehaving with women artistes. Govinda’s secretary, Shashi Sinha, has denied the incident. “Yeh insaan (Khanna) jooth bol raha hai…” he said. Khanna’s daughter, Ragini, is also a well known TV actor.
